Sports Roundup: Willows tennis, swimming results

Tennis

Wilson makes early exit

Willows High's Kaylen Wilson faced a familiar opponent in the opening round of the Northern Section Girls Tennis Championships on Saturday but the result remained the same.

Wilson played Sacramento Valley League champion Lucero Topete of Live Oak High and lost 6-0, 6-0.

"She has a hard time with (Topete), I think it's more mental with her and it's not that the girl is intimidating, (Wilson) just can't figure her game out." coach Don Byrd said.

With the loss, Wilson was eliminated from the tournament after earning All-SVL honors in her senior season.

Swimming

Honkers medal at Masters Meet

The team might not have many members but Willows High took home several medals at the Northern Section Masters Swim Meet on Saturday.

Freshman Molly Bateman took home the silver in the girls 100-yard butterfly well ahead of the third place finisher. Bateman (1:01.13) was a close second to the champion, Chico High's Maddie Johnson (1:00.88).

Bateman narrowly missed her second silver in the 100-yard backstroke. Pleasant Valley's Keely Johnson (1:02.20) took that spot ahead of Bateman (1:02.22).

The Honkers' lone senior, Kasey Foley, snagged a bronze in the boys 50-yard freestyle in 23.2 seconds and took sixth in the 100-freestyle (52.42).

The Honkers' Veronica Foley, also a freshman, took fifth in the girls 100-butterfly (1:04.53) after Pleasant Valley senior Maddie Gray touched the wall a hundredth of a second before. Foley (59.69) added a seventh place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.

Noah Parham was the fastest freshman in the boys 100-yard fly, taking eight overall with a time of 1:00.57. Parham also took 14th in the 100-yard breast stroke (1:13.79).

Jazmin Hernandez earned eighth place in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:25.02.

Varsity Volleyball

Paradise Adventist 3, Elk Creek 2

After taking the first two games each by the score of 25-23, Elk Creek High's volleyball game was unable to come up with the match-winner, losing the final three games 17-25, 22-25, 11-15 in Paradise Thursday.

Kristalyn Proctor led Paradise Adventist with nine kills and Leslie Cameron tacked on eight.

Serve-receive was a sore spot for the Lady Elks, as the hosts' Emily Harding served for 11 of the Cougars' 34 aces. Paradise Adventist also served for 65 points on the night.

Elk Creek statistics were not available before press time.
