Honkers hold SVL bragging rights
The nucleus of the Willows High varsity volleyball team returns this season after capturing the Sacramento Valley League title last year with a perfect 10-0 league run, something its SVL foes are going to find difficult to contend with.
"We have nine players on the varsity, which is down from the normal 10-14, but what we have is an amazing group of girls," said coach Carol Martin.
"Colleen Tade will be the only senior this year, and I anticipate she will be a huge part of our season, as she is a great setter and team captain," the coach said. Tade's height and net presence led her to 140 kills last season, and she was also the team's top server with 84 aces. On top of that, she led the way by passing out 71 assists.
Junior Mary Feeney and Sam Brott will be hitting from the outside, after having done the same for the varsity squad last season as sophomores.
Megan Hughes and Erika Click, both juniors, will be knocking them down in the middle. Click's timing and jumping ability helped her to a team-high 57 blocks last year.
New to the varsity this season is Natalie Massa. Martin describes her as a versatile player that can play anywhere, who may be digging up balls at the libero spot or setting.
Taylor Fermino has been working on playing opposite, which will be a huge help on blocking outside attacks. "She is smart and super versatile," Martin remarked.
She added, "Christine Van Tol has the potential to play anywhere and will be a big asset to the team."
As the defending league champions, Martin said, "We have a tough preseason which will get us ready for league. We are looking forward to a great season."
The Lady Honkers first take the court Aug. 30 at Wheatland.
