Willows wins pair in Orland tourney
Willows High's young girls basketball team notched two more wins over the weekend, going 2-1 in the Lady Trojan Classic in Orland to improve to 8-5 on the year.
Play began on Thursday with the Lady Honkers taking on Redding Christian, and advancing with a 55-41 win over the Lions.
Sophomore Morgan Hughes established a new career high in scoring with 25 points, with her total including three 3-pointers and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line.
Junior Ally Brunner helped provide a 1-2 scoring punch with 19 points.
The Lady Honkers came down with 26 rebounds, led by five each from Brunner and Kaylin Renfro, and four by Lexy Weber.
Brunner and Hughes each provided three assists, and Baneli Lomeli made four steals.
Anderson 68, Willows 48
After taking a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Honkers saw their 15-13 lead evaporate as they were outscored 14-8, 18-12 and 23-13 in each of the remaining three periods in Friday's loss.
Hughes answered four calls from long distance among her team-leading 19 points, with Brunner tacking on 13.
Alyssa Beatty scored seven points for Willows, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Hughes blocked four shots.
Katie Nunnelley double-doubled for the Cubs with 23 points and 14 rebounds, and teammate Jessica Lange pitched in with 17 points.
Anderson picked the Lady Honkers' pockets for 24 steals.
Willows 50, Orland 29
Willows faced a familiar foe in their Saturday contest, as they faced off with Orland for the third time in the season with the same victorious outcome as the two previous meetings.
Hughes came close to outscoring Orland on her own with 24 points, 18 of which came from treys.
Brunner paired her 14-point effort with 12 rebounds for a double-double, and Renfro notched tallied nine points.
The Lady Honkers host Esparto on Wednesday, and travel to play the Braves in Hamilton City on Friday.
