Honkers blank third straight foe
For the third-straight game to begin the season, junior keeper Josue Valenzuela and the stonewall Honkers' defense kept the opposition out of the net as the Willows High boys soccer team blanked visiting Paradise 2-nil on Tuesday.
Sophomore midfielder Fernando Cervantes and sophomore forward Giovanni Guttierez each notched second-half goals to help Willows improve to 3-0. It was Cervantes' second goal of the young season, while Guttierez upped his team-leading total to four.
Cesar Hernandez also recorded an assist, and the Honkers kept the offensive pressure turned to "high" as nine different players contributed to the team's 27 shots at the Paradise net.
Valenzuela thwarted all six shot attempts by the Bobcats.
The Willows girls fell to Paradise 3-0.
Coach Bud Ramirez reported that the Bobcats dominated play most of the game, and that the Lady Honkers were unable to capitalize on their chances.
"Our defense and goalkeeping kept us in the game," he said. Ramirez credited backs Jessica Mendiola and Devin Perez as well as the rest of the defense, and said that keeper Jennifer Chappel made some outstanding one-on-one saves.
The Willows girls fell to 0-3.
The Honkers return to the road Wednesday to play in Esparto.
