Honkers place second at Durham swim meet
Willows High swimmers earned second place team finishes in both the boys and girls divisions of a seven-team meet in Durham on Sept. 7.
Orland High took home the girls team title with 47 points, out-pacing the Honkers 34.
Veronica Foley and Molly Bateman took home two first places each. Foley won the 200-freestyle (2:11.63 seconds) and the 100-butterfly (1:08.13), and Bateman took first in the 200-individual medley (2:24.43) and 100-backstroke (1:06.1).
Jazmin Hernandez swam to a second place finish in the 100-breaststroke (1:27.60) and contributed points with a sixth-place finish in the 50-freestyle.
In the boys races, Kasey Foley took home victories in the 100-freestyle (51.7) and 100-backstroke (59.91). Noah Parham swam in second in the 200-freestyle (2:12.59) and the 100-butterfly (1:00.23).
The two Honkers scored enough points to edge out Gridley for second place, but remained far behind first place Durham.
The Trojans' girls used their depth to wrangle away the team title by winning the 200-medley relay race (2:30.23). Samantha Rubio took first in the 100-freestyle (1:10.68) and added a fourth-place finish in the 100-breaststroke (1:30.28).
Two third-place finishes from Bayleigh Fountain in the 50-freestyle (31.99) and the 100-breaststroke (1:28.77) helped boost the Trojans' team total.
Marley Matteucci placed in three races with a second place in the 100-freestyle (1:24.73), fourth in the 100-backstroke (1:39.75) and fifth in the 100-breaststroke (1:40.25).
Becky Pendergrass rounded out the Trojans' high score with a top-three standing in the 100-backstroke (1:21.63) and finished fourth in the 50-freestyle (32.11).
Princeton High's Mindy Perez made a strong showing by taking second in the 200-freestyle (2:19.06) and the 100-butterfly (1:14.49).
