Lady Honkers sink Pirates title hopes
The relentless attack of Megan Hughes and Mary Feeney, along with a strong defensive performance, helped the Willows High volleyball team take its first step toward repeating as Northern Section Division IV champions on Tuesday.
Playing in enemy waters, the sixth-seeded Honkers deep sixed the No. 3 Pirates with a 25-22, 16-25, 25-17, 25-22 victory in Wheatland.
Willows (29-8, 11-1 Sacramento Valley League) used twin canons Hughes and Feeney to blow holes in the Pirates defense, with each firing 14 kills, while Sam Brott's seven further strengthened the Honker assault.
Brott anchored the defense with 16 digs, Feeney came up with 11 and Hughes, nine.
Rylee Smith doled out 35 assists.
