Glory days revisited
Cards blank Trojans in annual alumni game
None of the players had sweated through grueling two-a-day
practices before taking to the gridiron at Corning High School Saturday, nor
had they spent long hours studying playbooks. Some of the players even wore
more padding - mainly around their midsections - than they did in high school,
and while the two teams playing were Corning and Orland, it was both teams that
wore "black and blue" before the night was over as the two locked up in the
annual Corning/Orland alumni game.
Pleasant weather made watching the game enjoyable for the
spectators on both sides of the field and may have taken some of the sting out
of the hits, as well as some of the sting out of the final score for Orland
fans, as Corning prevailed 17-0.
All the scoring took place in the second quarter as
Corning's Garrett White pushed it across from the 2-yard line for the first
points, with Brad Burton adding the PAT to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead.
Corning needed to move the ball 93 yards for its next score,
taking possession on its own 7-yard line, and completions of 40 and 24 yards
from White to his brother, Evan White, ate up a good chunk of the needed real
estate. Oscar Nero capped the drive with a 14-yard scoring run and Burton added
the PAT for a 14-0 lead.
Burton later added a 30-yard field goal in the second period
for what would turn out to be the game's final score.
Garrett White finished with 16 completions in 29 attempts
for 195 yards, with Evan White on the receiving end of five of them for 117.
Eddie Alvarado led the ground assault with 58 yards in five
carries, while Nick Thuemler pitched in with six carries for 42 yards.
The Trojans were led by Brett Romano's 29 carries for 104
yards, with brother Brandon Romano picking up 36 in 11 carries.
Scott Leach paced Orland's defensive effort with 13 tackles.
