Honkers drop pair to Redskins
The Colusa High School softball team got some help from the Willows Honkers on Thursday and then promptly thanked them by sweeping a doubleheader on Friday, 5-2 and 1-0.
The Honkers knocked off Durham 4-2 on Thursday to hand the league-leading Trojans their second league loss of the season. The Durham loss, along with the two Colusa wins, allowed the Redskins to move into first place in the SVL standings along with Live Oak at 6-2. Durham also lost on Friday to Live Oak to slump to 3-3 on the season.
Colusa got an outstanding effort from freshman pitcher Tiffany Friel, who pitched both games of the doubleheader and finished with 23 strikeouts over 14 innings of play.
Friel struck out 14 batters in a 5-2 win while giving up just one hit, a single to Courtney Perry.
In the second game, Friel struck out nine and allowed three hits in a 1-0 win. All totaled, Friel pitched 13 shutout innings in earning the two wins.
The normally potent Colusa offense wasn’t having a much better time against Willows’ Meghan Myers. The Redskins managed seven hits in the first game, including two each by Rylee Kampf and Kristi Nair, and just three in the second game. Myers finished with 13 strikeouts in the two games.
Perry, Hailey Daniels and Brooke Hofhenke each had singles in the second game for Willows.
The Honkers knocked off Durham on Thursday thanks to a pair of two-run innings. Daniels hit a two-run homer in the first inning, scoring Perry. Perry then ripped a two-run double in the second.
Myers got the win, limiting Durham to two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.
