San Mateo man killed near Butte City
A San Mateo man was killed early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash near Butte City.
The California Highway Patrol said Justin Prudhel, 27, was killed around 12:40 a.m. when he apparently failed to negotiate a sharp turn on County Road Z, just north of County Road 70.
It is unknown how fast Prudhel was traveling, but it appeared he tried to slow down before attempting to turn right on County Road 70, but was unable to negotiate the 90-degree turn, the CHP said.
Prudhel’s 2004 GMC drove off the roadway and collided with the guy wire support for a power pole, then hit a dirt embankment on the south side of an irrigation canal.
The vehicle ended up on its wheels in about 2.5 feet of water.
Prudhel, who was not wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.
It was not immediately known if alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident.
