River recovery efforts continue for missing canoer

Efforts continued this week to recover the body on a Bayliss man who went missing when he fell into the Sacramento River after his canoe capsized near Ord Bend more than a week ago.

James John Paidl, 62, is missing and presumed dead. He disappeared Nov. 23 during a canoe trip down the river that began in Hamilton City with a friend, Robert William Heberle, 60, of Woodland. Herberle swam ashore and was treated for hypothermia, but was otherwise unharmed. Both men were experienced boatsman and neither drugs or alcohol appear to have played any role, the Glenn County Sheriff's Office reported.

Sheriff Larry Jones said an advanced diver spent Thursday searching the bottom of the Sacramento River without success.

A full-scare search was halted last week after weather and visibility complicated recovery efforts. The sheriff's office returned Monday with cadaver dogs, an advance diver and equipment borrowed from the state Search and Rescue Department, Jones said.

Dive efforts could resume Sunday, Jones said, depending on weather and river conditions.
