Willows Friends of the Library seeking help

Christmas craft fair sales:

The Willows Friends of the Library Christmas Craft Fair raffle brought in $3,005, which will be used to purchase new stacking chairs for the library, along with an additional $662 in donations from other sources last month.

That money, plus an additional $1,000, should allow the library to buy up to 20 chairs with wooden legs that will not snag library carpets, officials said.

Additionally, the monthly book sales have increased in the last month with weekly earnings ranging from $30 to $44.

The group reported spending $10,227 in 2011 — nearly double what it did in 2010 when $5,217 was used.

As of Jan. 19, the group had just under $7,000 in its account, officials said.

The Willows Friends of the Library are looking for some help for their book sales and other fundraisers.

Like similar groups in neighboring communities, the friends are comprised of mostly retired people who find it difficult to handle the boxes of books that come in for their spring and fall events and the ongoing monthly sales they have in the library.

So they are asking local FFA, 4-H and Boy Scouts groups if they can help at the next big sale either later this spring or in the fall. The sale dates have yet to be set.

The student volunteers would assist in unpacking books and putting them on display inside the Elizabeth Eubanks Room.

Board members also voted to have the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month as work days for library volunteers to work on the sales events.

The work would run from 9:30-11 a.m. in the back room, so the activities will not disrupt regular library hours.

Friends President Brian Ramos suggested the group sell book or tote bags with their logo during the book sales just as the Orland Friends of the Library does.

The Orland bags sell for about $10, he said, and while there is not a lot of profit, they do brand the library.

Willows board members said they liked the idea and asked Ramos to look into it by getting a quote on bag costs.

Money raised by the organization goes to magazine and newspaper subscriptions, new books and computer or furniture equipment the library is unable to afford through its city and county funding, officials said.

In other business, Library Director Jody Meza said the application deadline to fill the cataloger's position was Thursday.

"It is a small pool of applicants," Meza said, but she hopes a suitable replacement for long-time cataloger Cha Yang will be found.

Yang retired in December after 20 years with the Willows Library to devote more time to family and her produce business.

She will, however, train the new person in March, Meza said, since she was required to wait 60 days after retirement before coming back on a short-term basis.

Meza also reported a new winter reading program for children starts this week thanks to a donation of theater tickets by some local physicians.

The next Friends of the Library board meeting is March 13 at 2 p.m. in the Eubanks Room at the Library, 201 North Lassen St.
