Woman, baby rescued as car sinks in canal

A Fairfield woman and her 1-year-old daughter were pulled to safety by bystanders Thursday morning before their car sank in an irrigation canal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that at approximately 9:45 a.m. Dani Jiminez Cruz, 22, was traveling north on SR-45 at approximately 55-60 mph. Cruz reported that she was trying to put her wallet back into a diaper bag when she noticed she was driving her 2006 Ford off the right side of the roadway.

She corrected hard to the left and stepped on her brakes, causing her to lose control and spin across the road before sliding upright into the canal on the west side of the road.

With the help of bystanders Cruz was able to get her child, Samantha Pareja, out of the car just prior to it becoming completely submerged.

Both were taken to Enloe Hospital, where Cruz was treated for minor injuries. Pareja was not injured.
