Suspect charged with murder in boyfriend's death

A Manton woman was arrested and remains behind bars in connection to the homicide of her boyfriend, who was found dead on Tuesday.

Susan Amelia Childs, 49, was booked on suspicion of murder in the death of 39-year-old Larry Lee Arnel of Manton. She is being held without bail.

Childs appeared in Tehama County Superior Court on Friday where she was formally charged with murder by the District Attorney's Office.

Tehama County Sheriff's deputies found Arnel, not breathing, on the floor of a mobile home on the 30000 block of Plum Creek Road, in Payne's Creek around 7 p.m. Tuesday, after receiving a call from Arnel's father, Larry Ellsworth Arnel, that his son and Childs had been in an argument and Childs had stabbed his son, said the sheriff's office.

Deputies started CPR on Arnel until medical personnel arrived about 10 minutes later and continued life-saving efforts until 7:50 p.m. when they pronounced him deceased, said deputies.

After a short search deputies were able to locate Childs in the area and took her into custody without incident, according to the sheriff's office.

This isn't Childs' first brush with the law. She was convicted of battery on a peace officer in 2005, was a defendant in a domestic violence case in 2003 at which time a restraining order was placed on her, and convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 2002, according to Tehama County court documents

The homicide investigation is continuing and the sheriff's office is not releasing additional information at this time.
