Furtado's killer sentenced Monday

The parents of Steven Furtado will address the man that killed their son for the first, and perhaps only time on Monday in Plumas County Superior Court.

Dan and Denise Furtado said they plan to speak in court before a judge sentences Reyes Carrillo-Garcia for the brutal May 11, 2008 double murder of their son and his girlfriend, Jennifer Carrigan of Chester.

Carrillo-Garcia, 19, was convicted Oct. 16, a year and a half after both 18 year-old victims were found slain by Carrigan's mother, Jodi Carrigan, in her home.

Plumas County prosecutors are seeking life in prison without parole, a sentence favored by the Furtados.

Carrillo-Garcia had threatened to kill Furtado on several occasions leading up to the attack.

He reportedly waited outside the Carrigan home May 11 and gained access to the front door with a hidden key. He snuck into Carrigan's bedroom and repeatedly stabbed both victims with a kitchen knife he picked up inside the house. He reportedly arranged both bodies in a failed attempt to cover his tracks, prosecutors said.

Arguing that Carrillo-Garcia suffered from an "acute stress disorder," Defense Attorney Richard Maxion asked the jury to convict his client on the lesser charge of manslaughter, but the jury rejected that argument after deliberating less than two full days.

Carrillo-Garcia remains in custody without bail in the Plumas County Jail.

Acute stress disorder, is that like when your girlfriend doesnt want to be with you anymore so you stalk her and kill her and the new boyfriend. Mr and Mrs John Q. Public do not deserve to walk the same streets as this animal. He needs to go away forever.
