Overdose: But was it suicide?

An overdose of the prescription drug Xanax caused the death last month of a 21-year-old Glenn County woman, the Coroner's Officer announced Monday.

Kaila Baker was found dead in her in-law's Willows home July 1.

Deputy Coroner Richard Warren said investigators are still trying to determine if the overdose was accidental or a suicide attempt.

He said deputies are still conducting interviews with her friends and family and many questions are still unanswered.

"It's still too early to tell either way," Warren said.

Baker had a history of clinical depression and was prescribed the drug by a doctor, Warren said.

Medical examiners found no evidence of alcohol or other drugs that would have contributed to her death, he said.

Xanax is a prescription drug also known as Alprazolam and is commonly used to treat anxiety and depression disorders, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. It is also commonly abused, and Xanax overdoses have been linked to many deaths including, most recently, actor Heath Ledger last year.

Baker graduated from Elk Creek High School in 2005 and joined the U.S. Army, where she provided medical assistance to elderly and disabled patients for more than three years. She continued her medical career in Glenn County after leaving the Army in 2008.

She was on active duty as an Army reservist at the time of her death.

In April, she married Willows native Bryan Baker after a brief, whirlwind romance that began online earlier this year.

God does not end lives or take people because he needs them. Death is part of the curse that humanity brought upon ourselves. Kailas death was accidental, the report has finally been done. Thank you to all that have stood by her family. Please, instead of being negative and lashing out at people that have no blame, the military, lets do what we can to awaken the drug industry to the dangers of prescription anti depressants such as xanax and possibly stop more senseless deaths like Kailas from occuring. Lets keep her light shining by saving lives, I know that this is what Kaila would have wanted.

Dear David, I don't know what part of Willows you are involved with, but the only negativity I hear is yours. Where in the article does it blame the military? I was part of the rededicating ceremony in Willows last month and was very moved at the amount of people that were very respectful of the military perhaps you should be involved with a better group of people. Willows is a wonderful community and has a lot of very nice people.

If you want to "face the facts" I have now known four people - FOUR - that have accidentally overdosed on the same drug, Xanax. It is a very powerful drug that is prescribed only in triplicate form. If you were to do some research on the drug you would find that it is very easy for the body to become accustomed to it and require more of it to get the same effect - the same as caffeine, alcohol, and many other drugs. I lost two beautiful, young friends to this same tragic fate in the last three years as well as a friend's mother - if for some reason people feel the need to point fingers or place blame or make assumptions, then it should be on this drug that is obviously not safe or on maybe the pharmaceutical and medical industry as a whole that are constantly pushing pills on us as a society. What happened to Kaila is tragic and sad and my heart goes out to her family and to Bryan's.

I do not see where any blame was attributed to the military here at all. Plus, Willows and Glenn County as a whole has always seemed to me to be very pro-military.

Reading this article it looks like good old screwed up Willows is trying to blame the death indirectly on the girl being in the Army and Army reserves. I'm a Army war vet from two different conflicts and from what I have seen going on here in Willows, It's very dissapointing to see what has happened to Willows in the last fifteen years. This community is full of negativity and seems to be totally against military and basically just doing the right thing. Don't blame the drugs, blame this BS town. GROW UP People. We are not in HIGH SCHOOL ANYMORE. MOVE THE ON and get a life of your own not others.

Thank you Chuck. You are very right about how easy an overdose is. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers. We all did lose someone very special to us. There is no benefit to anyone to assume that she had a reason to do this to herself. The people making these assumptions either really did not know Kaila or want to hurt people that were close to her. Neither one of those reasons is helpful to the grieving process. Please, I ask that instead of standing in judgement pray for the people that are still hurting from this loss. Reach out in Love instead of judgement.

Actually, it does not necessarily take a lot of medication to kill you. It depends on the type of medication, strength of the dosage, whether other medications are present, and the interactions between the medications. One common method of accidental overdosing sort of follows the pattern of thought that says if one pill makes me feel okay, a few more will make me feel great. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. My prayers go out to Brian, the Bakers, and to Wendy and Gilbert - Kaila's parents - and their family. They all lost someone important to them.

You would have to take alot of the medication for it to kill you, not one or two by mistake. She obviously was trying to do something. Just face the facts.

Kalia doesn't seem like someone who would take her own life. I don't know her, but I do know Bryan. I'll keep her and BJ in my thoughts.

It wasn't suicide. Kaila wouldn't have done that. She had finally found happiness and unconditional Love for the first time in her life. And those were words from her own mouth. I Love you Kaila, me sweet sister - in - law, and I miss you.
