Spears tries making yet another comeback with album, tour
If you're a Britney Spears fan, then you're likely having a great week — though if you are a true Britney Spears fan, you probably haven't had a great week since about 2002.
This week, Spears released her latest album, "Circus," which is part of her alleged comeback. This same comeback was attempted with her previous album, "Blackout," but since Spears was in no shape to promote the album, it was a failure compared with previous efforts.
However, few performers in good mental shape could have survived the massive failure of her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards last year.
So, this week, it's Britney Comeback, Part 2.
As opposed to "Blackout," Spears announced on Tuesday that she will, in fact, be touring in support of the album. The "Circus" tour comes to Arco Arena on April 11.
Even though Britney Spears is touring again, don't expect her to be singing. Even before she went crazy, she stopped singing live.
Now, after years of smoking, drinking and doing whatever else she's done that could weaken her vocal cords, her voice is even thinner. Listen to any of the tracks on "Circus" — her voice is so thin as to be almost nonexistent.
On Sunday, MTV aired a 90-minute special on Spears, called "Britney: For the Record." The special was promoted as her discussing all her troubles of the past few years. All the clips I saw indicated most of the bad stuff was glossed over — but, hey, she has a perfume out that you can buy at all fine retailers. (I bet it smells like sweat and stale cigarettes.)
Furthermore, Britney herself came off as really sad — putting up an "I'm happy" front to hide how trapped in her own life she feels.
So is this a successful comeback? Hardly. Spears has ruined her career forever.
No matter how many albums she sells, or how many public appearances she makes looking presentable, she'll always be the former pop princess who shaved her head and attacked an SUV with an umbrella.
